Matthew Bartolo on Having a Great Sex Life

Sex therapist and Lead Clinician at Sex Clinic Malta talks to us about how the food you eat can affect your sexual health.

What made you decide to be a sexologist?

I was doing a level 7 course to become a counsellor, when my tutors (both sex therapists) told me that the way I spoke about sex was quite relaxed and unique. They suggested I specialise in psychosexual therapy, so I did.

What was the response when you set up Dating101Malta on TikTok?

People were curious. Was this going to be boring educational videos or a hamallata Maltija?  These were some of the comments we got at the very beginning. Once we started uploading videos, people started appreciating what we’re doing and started contacting us with ideas and questions

We all know the saying, ‘You are what you eat’. Can ‘what you eat’ affect your sex life too?

Most definitely. Our physical and mental health effect directly, and indirectly, our sexual health. To have a great sex life you need to take care of your physical and mental health.

Are there any foods that can regulate testosterone, increase libido, and significantly improve sex drive?

Research is not very clear on this one, however, there’s been a lot of studies mentioning how exercising, and weightlifting help with testosterone generation. A healthy mix of protein, carbs, and fat help too. Maca, Magnesium, Zinc, and Vitamin D are found to help increase testosterone levels. To be honest, our medical team at Testosterone Clinic would know much more. Avoiding alcohol and drinking from certain plastic bottles helps to not reduce one’s testosterone levels.

Does eating certain types of food make sperm taste differently?

One’s diet effects what the sperm tastes like. Anything we ingest does affect the taste and smell of body fluids and secretions. Sperm is naturally bitter because of the alkaline element in the pH. The sperm is alkaline as it needs to balance the vagina’s acidity to stop it from killing one’s sperm.  Vaginas are acidic as they are self-cleaning.

Going back to semen. The better hydrated you are, the more seminal fluid you’d generate.  As regards to taste. Science is torn. Some do mention pineapple and cranberries as improving the taste, due to the high levels of acid. Well…there’s no harm in bingeing on pineapple and cranberries anyway 🙂

Do fried foods and processed foods diminish your sex drive? What about alcohol?

High levels of fats and alcohol can lead to cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and hypogonadism. These directly affect one’s sexual function: sexual desire levels, and arousal. So, stop frying your food and steam it instead and cut down on the alcohol if you would like to enjoy a good sex life 🙂

Are there any diet supplements that can improve your overall health and sex life?

Maca. Vitamin D. Magnesium. Zinc. These all help men’s physical and sexual health.
